An evening with James Cracknell

An evening with James Cracknell

We recently invited clients to spend an ‘Evening with James Cracknell’ where the double Olympic gold medallist and 6 times world champion oarsman shared the highs and lows of his career with an audience of some 400 people. The evening took the format of a ‘Q and A’ session where he was asked about how he kept himself motivated following the disappointment of missing the cut for inclusion in the boat in Barcelona in 1992 and then falling ill in the athlete’s village in Atlanta in 1996.

He dedicated the next 8 years to fulfilling his ambition to secure for himself a place in the boat in Sydney in 2000 and Athens in 2004 and attaining top spot on the podium on both occasions. In so doing he demonstrated the perseverance and dedication required to become an Olympic champion. The audience were delighted when he passed his two Olympic Medals among them.

He subsequently went on to explain the hurdles sportsmen have to overcome once they retire from their chosen sport and need to fill the void. In James’s case this has taken the form of setting himself extreme challenges; the risks of which were highlighted when he had a much publicised accident whilst cycling across the US which has had a life changing impact.
