Business confidence means more job opportunities in the UK

It has been six years since the credit crisis began, but recently Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne, stated that Britain is experiencing a “balanced, broad-based and sustainable recovery.” And it would seem that he is right. A survey conducted by Lloyds Bank, encompassing over 1,500 firms, also revealed that businesses finally believe that Britain’s banking system is working once more.

This survey, along with two other major business surveys concluded that British companies are more confident than they have been in 20 years about their prospects for growing sales, exports and profits. This newfound confidence has lifted investment intentions to a 19-year high, with an increase in the number of finance directors saying that bank credit now offers an attractive source of funding.

And there’s more good news. Unemployment rates have fallen to 7.4 per cent, which is their lowest point since early 2009. Ian Stewart, the chief economist at Deloitte, has stated that he feels the findings of these surveys demonstrate a shift in the nature of our economic recovery. Where before improvement was largely being driven by consumer spending, now growth will be powered more by corporate investment and job creation.

But what does this actually mean for recruitment?

This means good news for those currently seeking employment. It means that, thanks to increased profits, firms can start to think about expanding, and it means that businesses are feeling more optimistic about economic recovery than at any point since 2007. And that newfound confidence should translate into job creation, with 27 per cent of businesses surveyed stating that they planned to hire more staff in the next six months, and only 10 per cent expecting to have to reduce their work force. This is the strongest outlook on jobs that we have had since the economic crisis began.
