How To Get The Most From Temporary Employment

Temporary employment is the perfect way to bridge a gap between full-time jobs. However, in the current economic climate, it is also becoming a more popular option, a recent report showed that nearly 70% of job seekers said they would consider a temporary role.

Working on a temporary basis brings many benefits too. Ranging anywhere from one day to a number of years, temporary work provides flexibility and means that you don’t have to commit to long-term responsibilities. It also provides varied work, a wealth of different experiences and the chance to meet new people.

However, without the long-term goals you set with a permanent job, how can you get the most out of these temporary opportunities, to help push your career forward? At KennedyPearce, we offer a number of temporary employment opportunities for professionals and are here to help you. Take a look at our top tips and advice here:

Have a Plan:

Make sure you have a clear vision about the kind of work you would like to do. From there, choose somewhere where you will get the transferable skills and knowledge to further your career in the future.

Work Hard:
Make sure that you work hard and have a positive attitude, in the same way you would if you were a full-time employee. If others see you as a conscientious member of the team, you’re more likely to get noticed, gain experience in other areas of the business and potentially extend your job placement. If you run out of work, always ask for more. Remember that you are more likely to get recommended at the end of your placement if you have been a helpful and proactive member of the team.

You may be in the company for a short time, however, whilst you are there, make the most of this opportunity and network with people in the office. This may open new avenues in the future, or they may be able to help you develop your skills in certain areas. Don’t forget to add people on LinkedIn so you can keep in touch too!

Review and Recommend
In a temporary role, you are unlikely to receive regular reviews on your work, so it is important for you to record your developments throughout your placement. This can be through saving emails where you receive praise and asking for a recommendation. Arrange a time to sit down with your manager before the end of your placement and discuss the opportunities for lengthening your position. It is also a great opportunity to get feedback, which can be beneficial in securing your next role.
