Job Profiles: What skills are needed to be a PA?

If you enjoy a varied work day, where you have to use your own initiatives to tackle challenges hands on, then becoming a Personal Assistant could be the job for you.

Unlike other admin roles the role of a PA is less clearly defined.  Therefore, you have to respond to any challenges that are faced by your boss, company or team. This means that you need to be very adaptable and possess a wide range of technical and soft skills to be a successful PA.

Managers often rely heavily on their PA, trusting that work will be handled efficiently when they are not around. Discretion and confidentiality are therefore essential attributes for a successful PA.

Key soft skills for PA include:

Key Technical Skills needed to be a PA include:

To work as a PA you should also have proven experience of administrative work. Having great computers skills and experience with different computer packages is a must. Extra skills like short hand, touch typing and audio typing will be an added bonus.

In addition to these skills, a PA needs to keep on top of organisational issues and have a good understanding of the organisation’s aims and objectives. In some cases you could be representing your superior and acting on their behalf.

Duties of a PA include:

  • Organising travel and preparing complex travel itineraries,
  •  Attend meetings on your boss’s behalf
  •  Taking dictation,
