Sedentary Job Bad For Your Health

Just how bad can your sedentary job be for your health?

Do you spend almost all of your working day sitting down, and does your job regularly involve long hours? Is the problem compounded by the fact you drive to work, or at least drive to your local railway station to get the train? Here we look at ways a sedentary job could be harming your health, and what you might be able to do about it.

  • Sitting down for long periods every day can lead to multiple health complications, including muscular-skeletal disorders, obesity, diabetes, cancer and heart disease. Whilst your job may require long hours and long periods of sitting down, ask yourself if you can walk to the railway station in the morning and evening, if you can take a short walk at lunchtime, or if you can visit a gym outside working hours. The NHS recommends 150 minutes of exercise each week.
  • If you sit with the wrong posture for hours on end every day, it can lead to issues such as backache, neck pain and spinal curvature. Adjust your chair so that the top of the screen is level with your eyes, and your feet are flat on the floor. If necessary, put something under your monitor to raise its height. Use a cushion on your office chair. Sit no closer than one and a half metres from the screen. Try to keep your shoulders back and your arms parallel with the floor
  • If you have to use a computer screen for long periods when working, it could lead to eye strain, headaches and migraines. Ensure you have regular eye tests, and if your optician recommends it, consider paying a bit extra for lenses that are designed for people who use computers a great deal. Try to take a break from the screen for at least five minutes per hour, and use the time to complete other work tasks that don’t require use of the computer
  • You can get repetitive strain injury if you keep your computer mouse in the same position, so try to move it around occasionally
  • Bacteria and other germs can build up on your computer keyboard, so ensure that you clean the keyboard regularly
