Why September is a Great Month for Job Hunting

A Good Senior Manager

The most popular month for taking a holiday in the UK is certainly August. Many employers thus reduce recruitment activity during high summer as they know that many candidates will be away, as will some of their own recruitment staff and some recruitment consultants. Therefore, September is often the month when many new vacancies are advertised.

In addition, people often return from their holiday having used their leisure time to think about whether their career needs a change of direction.

The period from September to November can be a very attractive time to recruit new staff as fewer holidays are taken at this time of year. This allows companies to carry out assessment of applications, interviews and training of new staff without interruptions caused by people being away.

Some employers of course start winding down for Christmas in December, so want to complete their recruitment drive in September so that staff can start work before this end of year lull occurs.

September is of course also when many companies welcome their new graduate recruits.

So given September is such a busy month for recruitment, now could be the time to think about whether you want a new job, and if you do, to consider the following:

  • What type of role do you want – something similar, something slightly more senior in your usual line of work, something slightly different to what you are doing now, or something completely different for which you could have transferable skills?
  • Brush up your CV, seeking professional advice from a recruitment consultant
  • Take some training in interview techniques
  • Identify roles you want to apply for, and get your applications submitted
